Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium Giraffe Care Center

Project Scope

Ground-Up
This two-story giraffe care center with a mechanical basement supports modern animal welfare and sustainability, providing stabling and enclosures for giraffes, okapi, red river hogs, and pygmy hippos, along with staff operational spaces.
Animal Habitats
The structure is precast concrete wall panels, a steel frame, and a standing-seam metal roof with TPO at flat areas. Pygmy hippos require a humid environment which is accommodated by the use of precast concrete and masonry to prevent corrosion. The giraffe and okapi areas include tall-volume space and a mezzanine. Flooring varies by species, with some pens incorporating radiant heating and others using slab-on-grade topped with three feet of natural substrate.
Complex Logistics
The site presents logistical challenges due to limited laydown space, requiring precise coordination of construction activities. Excavation and rock removal will be managed to protect nearby orangutans, gorillas, and elephants, while clear wayfinding and safety signage will keep visitors safe during construction.
