Rycon was responsible for the gut and demolition of a former JCPenney into a new 12-screen, 2,200-seat, high-definition movie theatre at Monroeville Mall. Logistics were key to maintaining safety of mall patrons as well as the flow of the traffic to reduce any impact to one of Western Pennsylvania’s largest malls. The 50,000 sq. ft. theatre’s main entrance was through the mall; therefore creating a unique, atypical challenge to the project. There were materials used and special “green” techniques integrated in the construction including energy efficient systems, low VOC materials, debris recycling (steel, metal, and copper from JCP demo was send to a recycling facility while leftover concrete and masonry was used as fill for the theatre), and use the of regional materials to the best of Rycon’s ability. Overall, the team completed the “NextGen” state-of-the-art theatre with enhanced sound system on budget and schedule in 11.5 months.
