The goal of this multi-phase renovation in the historic Hamerschlag Hall, built in the early 1900’s, was to rejuvenate and upgrade the Maker Wing to keep pace with advanced manufacturing and research pursued by the University’s engineering programs. New wet/dry labs, research facilities, classrooms, offices and student workshops were included, as well as a graduate student suite with multiple lounges and kitchenettes. The interior structure and layout was realigned to make more efficient use of the space, and to achieve a greater user-friendly navigation. The work spanned 20-months through two academic years in the occupied building. Great consideration was taken during phasing and planning to allow full use of the building during the project. The project required extensive structural demolition of existing floor plates and the original exterior walls. Erection of new structural steel was required as well as new concrete foundations. Additionally, new mechanical and electrical systems were installed to which required temporary tie-in, off hour shutdowns, and rebuilding a temporary AHU to serve the building while the new one was installed. The project achieved LEED Gold Certification.
