Santa Ana de Mancero Service Project

Emily Eichner, Assistant Project Manager at Rycon, recently led a team of eight professionals (engineers and healthcare workers) to Santa Ana de Mancero, Ecuador, for an Engineers Without Borders service project. The Pittsburgh Professional Chapter traveled to the region to update the community’s poor drinking water infrastructure. The community is exhibiting negative health effects from excess fluoride and chromium, both toxic in large amounts, likely due to their proximity to active volcanoes. The EWB team gathered water samples, flowrates, and performed an extensive household survey. They are currently researching a filtration method to remove excess fluoride and chromium from the drinking water based on the information found. Once a method is chosen, the team will go back to the community to design and build a filtration system. #service #engineers #publichealth #community
